Just For Fun…

Hey witches! So here’s a question, what do you all think of anthologies? Do you like reading collections of shorter stories by different authors in one book?

Just for fun, I’m putting here a random unedited scene for my novella  in the anthology SUN, SAND, SEX. This was one of my favorite scenes to write–it just amused me. I did have to edit one word in there because that word attracts Internet Trolls. Read it if you like or skip it–whatever makes you happy today!

Nick took a step toward her before his brain kicked in. It was the damned pink panties. When she’d opened the door and he’d seen her wearing a thin pink tank top, she’d taken his breath away.
Then he’d seen the panties and his blood went south. He’d hardened so fast it was a wonder he didn’t get dizzy.
Clenching his fists, he knew his hard on strained against his pants. “Lexie-”
She stepped up to him and put her hand on his chest. “I’m tired of being cautious and worrying about tomorrow. I want to try impulsive.”
He caught her hand and inhaled. Damn, she smelled like that flower, night jasmine or whatever, mixed with warm skin. His whole body throbbed with hard core lust. They were both on adrenaline overload. He could control this, he would control it. “No. No sex.” He barely got the words out.
Her body deflated, and her hand slid from his grasp. “Okay. Thanks again, Nick. I’ll call you in I’m in trouble, but not for sex. Good night.” She reached for the door.
She was making him crazy, infuriating him. He wanted her naked and under him, looking up with unfocused eyes while he drove himself into her. He wanted her breath to hitch and pant as she lost control, her body shivering and spasming with pleasure while he watched.
Then she had the nerve to pull open her door, put a hand on her hip and stare at him expectantly.
He had to shock them both back to reality. “If anyone walks by, they are going to see you in your panties.”
She looked down. The expression on her face was priceless, total shock.
Nick reached over, closed the door and locked it. Then he turned to see Lexie walking quickly to her dresser. Away from him. Her tight ass covered by the sheer pink panties twitching in her rush. He was going to burst into flames. Before he realized it, he was moving. He scooped her up in his arms.
“Nick! What are you doing!”
“Putting you in your bed and covering you up before I do something stupid.” He all but dropped her on the bed and wrenched the covers up over her.
She sat up, leaning back against the pillows. “I’m not going to attack you!”
He stared down at her.
Her gaze moved to his crotch. Then her gaze slid up. “Oh.”
“I don’t get emotionally or sexually involved with my work. Ever.” He’d learned that the hard way, and he never forgot the lesson.
She blinked, her mouth tightening as she seemed to battle with herself, then she lowered her gaze back to his crotch. She jerked her head looking everywhere but at him. “Okay. Got it. You should leave now.”
Nick leaned down, putting a hand on either side of her hips so he was nose to nose with her. “I’m not leaving you alone so another lunatic can break in here. I’m staying. And if you don’t stop talking, or wiggling that prime ass of yours in front of me, I’m going to strip you down to your skin and f**k you until you are screaming my name in pleasure, over and over. And then when I regain my senses and realize that I screwed up, I will be forced to take you back to Santa Barbara immediately and insist that you be locked up in a cell where you’re safe until we find your stalker. Your choice.”
“I’ll stop talking.”

Ni-ice, Jen! Sounds like a great beach read.
I like anthologies because I tend to discover new-to-me authors. I’m reading one now, Faeries Gone Wild, and yes, I’ve discovered a new author. :-) I like her story better than the bigger names on the book. IMO: Anthologies are a good way for a mid-list author to pick up new readers.

WOW! Jen, I love this!! You had me at ‘pink panties’. lol I would be all over this. So good!

Anthologies–I swing both ways. Sometimes I like them, and sometimes only 1 story is good. I usually buy them because of a author I know, then like, Margaret, find a new author that I like.

So when does this one come out????

    I. Want. This. Story! Dudette! Jen….*whine* I’m hot, bothered, and snorfling coffee out my nose all at the same time. Jiminy Cricket but I love your writing!

Oh…can I ask a technical question? (Because I’m too lazy to google it…) What is a book flat?

I’ve got 58 pages to finish before the Only’s glaucoma appointment this afternoon…and a poll over on Penumbra. I’ll be back for Happy Hour after the appointment. I’m putting in my order for Biker Boy and a huge pitcher of appletinis! Kthnxbai.

Kira, this is already out. You can buy it at any book store under the name Jennifer Apodaca.

Jen, I think I own this one, I’m definitely going to have to go digging for it. I don’t usually read anthologies. Jennifer Crusie did a couple of books with Anne Stuart and another author where they each wrote a character but it was one story. I read those but that’s it. I gotta go find that book. digs out protective gear to go through TBR mountain

*puts Rescue Dog(tm) on standby for Erika*

Jen, I forgot. I tend to buy anthologies for an author I “collect”. If I’m lucky, I discover a new author to enjoy.

Margaret, good for you! Now I have to go look up that anthology. I have a list of books to order a mile long.

Publishers use anthologies to showcase their midlist authors with a NYT bestseller lead. So you’re exactly right!

Thanks, Kira, LOL I swing both ways too! And it all depends on my mood. Sometimes I get frustrated when I love the short story because I wish it had been a full length novel. And I’ve read those where only one story worked for me.

This one was published a few years back. I’m not sure it’s even available anymore, I think the publisher is out of stock.

Silver, first I have to snort coffee at your Jiminy Cricket! My husband says that, only he says it, “Jiminy Cricket Jen” in such a hilarious way that we all crack up. My middle son mimics it perfectly. Anyway…

    Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Book flat? Do by chance mean cover flat? That’s exactly what it sounds like, the cover for books are printed “flat” and usually authors get a stack of just the covers like that for promotion. Later they books are bound with the covers and the yare no longer “flat.” Did that answer your question?

58 pages….GO!!! Do it! Then come back for appletinis and biker dude!

Erika, oh dear, I didn’t mean to send you into the danger zone! You will report back and let us know you’re okay? Or maybe you could send the monkeys instead?

Ah, and you were ahead of me to let Kira know the book is out, thanks!

I didn’t read that Jenny Cruise one…just didn’t strike my interest for some reason, probably cuz I’m fickle.

I’m OK. I was wrong though. I have the Sex on the Beach Book Club. Note to self, find Jen’s book on amazon I need to get in gear and read that one too. I bought the book but put it aside to get Samantha Shaw out of my head before I read a different book by you. I wanted to give it a fair chance, then it got buried. Sorry.

    Glad you enjoyed the scene.

I hadn’t thought about the connection of the pink panties to Kira’s Becca :-)

Kira, did Becca insist on pink as her favorite color? Those are the best characters!

Thank you, too, for the plug!

The appointment went awesome! She’s gone from 2350 in the bad eye to 2100. I sent off the proofs and heard back from my editor. She said the copy reader LOVED the book! Hopefully, yes, I should have a release date in a few weeks, but I’m worried now it will be mid-spring. That’s okay. At least it’s coming out and if I get on the ball with FAERIE FIRE, maybe there’ll be close releases. We’ll see. It’s late, so time for a night cap. Brandy anyone?

    Hi Jenn,
I just have to say I love your writing! I read through your Samantha Shaw series pretty quick (I so miss her and Gabe, what a hotty!)I was hesitant to get into your new genre but seeing as I am a huge “Charmed” fan I figured it would be good and you didn’t disappoint! Keep up the good work and can’t wait for the new book in November (please tell me it will be available for the Kindle??) Oh, and I now have your website bookmarked so I can see the hunky pictures you post and read your funny responses to comments.
