Working Class Hero?

By now you all probably know the story of the Jet Blue Flight Attendant, Steven Slater, who lost it and quit dramatically.  The original story is here if you haven’t seen it. Basically,  the story is that he allegedly had to deal with a very rude passenger who hit him in the head with luggage, swore at him, and refused to apologize.  Slater then got on the PA system and swore and the comes my favorite part:

Slater is alleged to have then activated the plane’s inflatable emergency slide, grabbed two beers from the galley, then slid down the chute…

The guy knows how to make an exit! I love that he grabbed two beers first, the man clearly has his priorities!  Now people are calling him a “Working Class Hero,” because who hasn’t thought of quitting in big way like that?

In some of my jobs I sure did! But while this story amuses me,  I think Working Class Hero is going a little far. Although I might feel differently if I was a flight attendant!

So what do you think?

He went too far by opening the chute and sliding down and I know the plane had already landed, but that was a still bit much.

What Dru said. I know it was the ultimate ‘take this job and shove it’, but he crossed the line into irresponsible. It kinda makes me wonder if he brought his job stress on himself. And is it just me or does he look way too smug in those videos of him in handcuffs?

Dru, he really did go too far. Swearing over the speaker system was way out of line too.

I don’t think his behavior warrants seven years in prison–I think firing, loss of benefits and a fine would make the point.

B.E., I noticed that too. I liked this story better when I first heard it, when it just seemed funny. Now I suspect we’re going to find out all kinds of stuff that changes my perception.

I’ve know that feeling! My only beef is the fact he didn’t consider the ground crew and could have severely injured someone when he pulled the slide.

But…a hero? Naw. Not really. Just one more smuck who got tired of dealing with the stupid people and went brain dead himself, thus becoming one of them.

Okay.. he is a smuck. Yeah, we all would like to do the “take this job and shove it” tactic but still.. a bit of a drama queen huh. And I agree with Silver, he did not think of the grounds crew when he did that. Working Class Hero… Nah… My Working Class Hero’s are the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday for us!

Cecile, all true! And of course, we’re going to find out that there’s more to this story…there always is.
