Catching Up & Wednesday Worthy

Wizard and I had a really nice Memorial Day. We stayed home, indulged in a margarita in the Jacuzzi then cooked lobster together. The lobster came out perfect.

And now I’m back to panicking on book 3. It’s time to just type and remember what Nora Robert’s says:

Okay and here’s our Wednesday Worthy Candidate. I can’t remember if I posted him before or not (and if so, I think he’s worth reposting!)

So what do you think, is he worthy? And how was your weekend?

A Day to Remember

Here in the U.S., Memorial Day is a day when we pause to honor our servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you to the fallen. Your bravery humbles me.

Thank you to the families.  Your sacrifice breaks my heart.

Happy Friday Five

Happy Friday! Time to share five random things about our week. Let’s do this!

  1. One of my sons and his wife are off to Tahiti. They REALLY deserve the vacation, but I’m surprised they forgot to take me. Kind of rude, right?
  2. And this is Jett, middle son’s puppy, at the RC (Radio Control) car track. Jett’s almost a year old and obviously totally into RC Car Racing. Or maybe he just wants to chase the cars on the track :-)
  3. My shoulder sucks. I whined on FB so I’ll spare you all here.
  4. I’m getting some amazing feedback on Savaged Dreams (book 1) from early reviews,  and on Savaged Vows (book 2) from editors, but the final book Savaged Devotion book 3 is being a total nightmare to get started. True story, though: Wizard said, “There’s no way you can write a first draft in 6 to 8 weeks. And me? I said “Put on the coffee, dude, this is happening.” So I guess now I have to make it happen???? Damn. I’ll be writing but butt off despite this blasted shoulder/neck/arm thing.
  5. Tomorrow we’re heading out to Middle Son’s to celebrate his birthday.  I’m making lemon pound cake. I can’t wait–we always have fun with them.

Monday is Memorial Day in the U.S. so it’s a long weekend here. Whatever you’re doing this weekend, have a great one! But before you do, share your Friday Five.

Wednesday Worthy

It’s been a tough week for various reasons, so let’s see if we can find something to cheer us up…

So what do you think?

What Do You Think?

I started my career in light, fun and sexy mysteries. I loved those books.

Then I wrote standalone romantic mysteries.  I loved those too.

Then I wrote paranormal. I LOVED those!!

Then I wrote the Plus One Chronicles and now the spin-off Savaged Illusions Series, OMG I love these books too.

And this is what happens when you have too many passions as an author.  We push ourselves as a writer, strive broaden our skills and hopefully improve our emotional depth. But we will lose some of our readers.

This is something I’ve struggled with all my career as a writer.

Here’s a marketing truism: If you find one genre and voice that you’re good at, and stick with that, then you will win the hearts of readers, and keep building. But if you follow your multiple passions to write in multiple genres, and you don’t write fast enough, then you will lose some readers and dilute your sales. For example, people who read only read paranormal aren’t going to read your contemporaries.

And here is another truism: Readers have the absolute right to choose which books they want to read. I don’t care if they loved your historical romance, they do not owe it to you to at least try your amazing fantasy. It’s the reader’s time and money, and they choose how they wish to spend those resources. Period.

So what does a writer do?

Tell me what YOU think?

Happy Friday Five

Hope everyone had a great week! Okay let’s do our Friday Five, which is a list of five random things about our week.

  1. Savaged Vows, book 2 in the Savaged Illusions Trilogy went off to my copy editor yesterday! It feels like a real accomplishment to me. For those keep score, this book has two editors and four rounds of edits (same with Savaged Dreams). I’ve cut 4200 (almost 17 manuscript pages) words from the first draft to the final one that is something I’m very happy about. Savaged Vows will be up for pre-order in a couple of weeks.
  2. My final physical therapy appointment on Wednesday didn’t go as well. I was “hot” with a pretty significant flare of swelling and nerve pain. They are sending an evaluation to my doctor asking for “diagnostics” which is an x-ray and maybe an MRI. I’m disappointed in that I worked hard in PT, and did all the exercises at home–the only exception was the day of my colonoscopy. But we can’t all have the easy solution.
  3. Tonight (Thursday as I’m writing this) I plan on having coffee ice cream, and I’ll probably put chocolate syrup on it. I love coffee ice cream!
  4. I have bright blue fingernails.
  5. I think every time I have a new idea, someone should slap me. Wizard instantly volunteered for the job but I told him no. He was sad. (I’m teasing people, please don’t take this as anything more than a joke. Wizard and I have a twisted sense of humor, but neither of us is violent.)

That’s my Friday Five, what’s yours? Have a great weekend!

Catching Up & Wednesday Worthy

Hey friends! I’m back! This is a long post, so if you want to get right to the Wednesday Worthy Candidate, skip to the bottom of the page. Otherwise I’m going to make up for lost time and chatter!

Friday: I recorded the Romance Between the Pages podcast interview with Victoria Danann and Riley J. Ford. Victoria and Riley were both very engaging and made the whole thing easy. I was surprised when I looked at the time and realized almost an hour had passed. My one interview tip gleaned from this experience: While it’s important to prepare, I did two things wrong: I should have had better pitches for my books (that’s typical of me), and I shouldn’t have anticipated questions. For instance, I was thinking they would ask me about authors that influenced me to write, so I had those all thought out. Instead they asked me who I loved to read now…and I blanked. There’s a very real distinction between being prepared and thinking you know what will be asked. The podcast interview with me will go live June 2nd.

Friday bonus: Riley J Ford has a really cool website that compiles a list of free books here Free Books for Free

  • Free Books For Free is a one-of-kind directory of all the free e-books on Amazon (other vendors coming soon). You can search by genres, authors, categories, or just browse for fun…all in one place! Download as many books that you want and start reading…for FREE! Happy reading!

If you like free books, check it out!

Saturday: I wrote the back cover blurb for Savaged Vows.

Sunday: Ugh. I did the prep for the colonoscopy and lets just say that’s a miserable experience and I’m glad I had the foresight to suggest to my kids that we skip Mother’s Day this year. My kids all called or texted, and that was fine. Next year, I’ll be a total diva and demand attention :-)

Monday: They colonoscopy was soooo much easier than the prep. I slept through it, everyone was super nice, and they were very careful of my bad shoulder. The preliminary results were great, although I have now seen pictures of my colon. I can’t unsee it, people. Wizard thought it was cool.

FYI, Wizard is weird.

And…switching to decaffeinated coffee, along with cutting out Diet Cokes and other sources of caffeine prevented me from getting the caffeine withdrawal headache and nausea. YAY! But going decaf didn’t seem to do much for my insomnia or anything else. I’m slowly going back to caffeinated coffee now because decaf tastes rancid witches brew.

Tuesday: I had a Skype meeting with my critique partner, Marianne and she a genius! She helped me figure out my black moment in Savaged Devotion (book 3)! I’ve been trying to work this out for a while, and just couldn’t do it. One 45 minute call to Marianne and I was bouncing off the walls with happiness. I also got the final edits from my editor on Savaged Vows (book 2), and she swears this book is great. I hope so! It goes to my copy editor next week for a final proofreading, then off to formatting and up for pre-order.

It’s been a wildly busy since just last Friday.

Moving onto Wednesday Worthy. This guy caught my eye for the yoga pose.  I’m going to try yoga, although my shoulder remains a problem despite PT. So while I don’t really find this guy “hot” I’m extremely impressed by his strength and control.

So what do you think, is he worthy?
