Friday Five
GRRR! I accidentally set this for August 6 rather than August 16th. Dumb Witch Moment! Anyhow here’s the blog on the correct date:
TGIF!! Let’s dive right into sharing five things about our week:
- I made a lot of cookies this week. We took some last night to youngest and his wife (different kind of cookie for each). We also went to see the progress of the work they are doing in the backyard. It’s a long term weekend project of building stacked stone walls and a lot more. It going to look stunning when they’re done!
- Yesterday I worked on sourdough bread and sourdough pizza dough. I made a misstep in the bread-making process which was annoying. Hopefully it’ll come out anyway. The missteps was the usual reason — me trying to do too much in too short of time. Even with excuses, though, it’s still my fault!
- Maggie sort of mentioned this, but assuming nothing goes wrong, I’m having surgery on Wednesday. It will be 60 miles away in a brand new medical center that just opened one month ago. So we took a test drive out there to make sure we could find it — we did with no problems. Inside, it was pretty, clean and calm, the receptionist very helpful, and they have easy parking in a structure right next to the building. I’m happy as that’s less walking for Wizard than it would be at a big hospital. This building specializes in treatments, procedures and surgeries related to my diagnosis, so not a typical hospital. We have to be there at 5 am On the upside, we’ll be ahead of the morning traffic. And yes, Maggie is going to boarding for three nights just to make it easier for Wizard, and less stressful for Maggie.
- Yesterday I went out first thing in the morning to do some weeding and trimming in the planters, and I didn’t take my phone. I missed a call with my Insurance Middle Man Company that does all the authorizations. I realized it when I went in the house to grab my water, and that sparked an hour and a half of phone calls. Wizard knew I had to make those calls ASAP and finished up the gardening work. The whole point of me doing it was to make it easier on him. Even so, the two of us got a lot done and he didn’t mind. Also — the missed call was just to tell me the surgery had been approved. Why the first person I talked to when I called back couldn’t tell me that — I don’t know — she couldn’t even find my file, which makes me wonder if she was working on an etch-a-sketched or a computer linked to the company network? So many questions…but it doesn’t matter now, I’m approved.
- Today I think I’m going to lunch with my sister and probably having chocolate cake! Of course, the plans can change if something comes up for her and that’s fine too. The weekend will mostly be getting what I can done before the surgery.
That’s my five, let’s hear yours! I have everyone has a fun weekend!

Okay, so I missed this this morning, but it was misplaced, so it’s all good. Yay for lots of cookies! Bummer for the bread mishap. Fingers crossed it turns out okay. Same goes for your surgery. I’ll be thinking about you and sending positive thoughts your way. Yay for insurance approval, even if they had to send you through the runaround to find that out. Yay for lunch with sister and chocolate cake!
1) It was grocery day. I made it under budget for the third week in a row. Go, me. This is good because it’s a 5 grocery trip month.
2) I made coffee cake with yogurt again, and it didn’t turn out right again, even though I realized what I did wrong last time. It was still tasty, but dry. Last time, it came out the consistency of cheesecake – infinitely tastier but not coffee cake. I bought more yogurt, so I can try again. I will conquer this recipe!
3) I talked to the phone tech supervisor again today – because our phone is out again – and he said it could be 3-4 months before they get it fixed. Yep, months. He said he’d get a tech over to reset it, so we could have phones for a few days before it goes out again. Derp.
4) Hubs and I went for a walk the other day – 1.7 miles. I was not quite up to that yet, but I did it.
5) I think I need chocolate cake, too. Maybe once we finish this coffee cake thing, I’ll make some. =o)

B.E, yep the misplaced blog was my screwup. So sorry! But glad you dropped by anyhow! And thanks, everything is moving fast suddenly, but all good. We are just glad that soon all this stuff will be behind us
1) Yes!! I love coming in under budget on grocery shopping! Go you!!! And yeah, those five week shopping months are tricky.
2) Looks like you made progress figuring out the coffeecake. Maybe flour to yogurt ration? Or the fat content in the yogurt? I generally find full fat Greek yogurt (plain and unsweetened) swaps best — but you know how baking is — it could be several factors and it takes a lot of experimenting to find the right answer. It’s the cheesecake consistency that’s so baffling to me. Coffeecake should have a tender crumb to it. But I know if anyone can figure it out, it’s you!!!
3) I don’t even know what to say about this phone situation. I’m so sorry for the endless, circular frustration!
4) 1.7 miles is a lot!!! Congrats! It’s impressive you did it even when you’re not quite up to it.
5) The chocolate cake was amazing!! I couldn’t finish it but brought the rest home for Wizard (I’m be a little careful not to trigger my stomach before surgery). You definitely need chocolate cake!
Hope you’re weekend is amazing!

ARGGGHHHH! I had this done and ready to sign off and I clicked some weird combination of keys because “fat fingers” and my comment disappeared. *headdesk headdesk headdesk* Take 2 but shorter. Grrr. Yay for all your good news! Having that first appt for surgery is a good thing. You don’t have to fast as long, the doc is fresher, and you get in on time because nothing has happened to delay things in front of you. Sadly, big corporations are like big government–no one has a clue. Hope you got to see Biker Witch and got chocolate cake. My 5:
1. Jake had his annual. He’s put on 25 lbs. but the vet not too concerned. All his tests came back negative and his ears are clear. The cyst on his neck did come back and they drained that along with a pedicure and pawhair trim. Yay.
2. I had labs on Wednesday. My doc was concerned about my liver after my labs in June. All is almost back to normal and looking good, but I’m low on creatine–which builds muscle. That’s an easy supplement.
3. LG took me on an excursion to Wallyworld. Holy carp! They are completely redoing the interior. Everything has been moved around, the check out area is completely different, and departments like the clothes are being “upgraded” in “decor.” I didn’t get to “just wander” to get re-acclimatized. I’ll probably start doing the WW runs and LG will do the other grocery stores he likes because they are cheaper on some of our staples. Works for me.
4. It’s hot. Realy REALLY hot! 🥵 I’m sooo ready for fall!
5. Poor Pete. He was outside when we were leaving for lab appointment on Thursday. Jake went tearing out of the garage and literally jumped over Pete. Pete was freaked. Jake just wanted to get to the island so he could leave his mark. There are dog being walked in the neighborhood that mess up his perimeter! Pete just sat there, frozen, afraid that Jake would come after him or something. (FYI, inside the house, they mostly ignore each other. LOL)
That’s my 5. Have soccer today, tonight and tomorrow. Something to report on Monday! Yay. Have a great weekend. Hope you get lots done, Jen. We’ll be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers! I’m so happy they got you scheduled and in so quickly!!! (Especially after all the other delays!)
