Friday Five

TGIF!! Friday showed up again, which means it’s time to share five random things about our week. Here’s mine:

  1. This week has been a heck of a lot better than last week! The heat is on at a 100+ daily here and that’s limiting our outdoor stuff, but otherwise, not a bad week. I did a few things like got my hair done. It’s still short and I like it most of the time. I also bought makeup. I’ve never been good at makeup, but I wear it daily just to feel like I made an effort. And I baked some sourdough bread and gluten free, dairy free brownies. The bread seemed to come out fine. The brownies are from a recipe off the internet, and somehow, the oven temp didn’t print so I guessed 350 degrees. Gluten free flour is tricky so these are Goldilocks brownies — they might be overdone, underdone or just right :-)
  2. Wizard got his stitches out, and that night, he opened up one spot on his eyelid. I mentally over-reacted, but it turned out to be fine, just a little surface break in the healing area. We treated it, did a makeshift butterfly bandage to sleep with to prevent him from accidently scratching it, and it’s healing up well. Whew — for a few minutes, I thought I was going to have to drag him to Urgent Care.
  3. My sinus x-rays have not yet been read by the radiologist as of late Thursday afternoon. It’ll be a week today. If it’s not read and the report issued by this morning, I will be calling and “encouraging” people to do their jobs. If I get resistance, I’ll be informing my insurance that a provider they are paying is not doing their job. I’ve been patient and nice until now, but they are running a cattle operation there, and I’m over it.
  4. Due to the heat, if we run out of things to do in the late afternoon or evening, we’ve been watching Yellowstone. Now I’ve never been to Montana, but I’m guessing this may not be a fair representation of the state in all things, LOL. But as long as one doesn’t mind violence and murder being the go-to solution for all life’s problems, the show can be entertaining.  And we’re watching it together which is nice. Maggie can even get on the couch outside of her normal couch time. She loves it!
  5. We hope to go see Turbo on Sunday. Oldest offered to have us over but I didn’t nail down the plan as I should have. Today I need to do that with my daughter in law, only because she knows their family schedule better than my son and there may be something he forgot going on that day. Otherwise she always welcomes us. That will be fun!

So that’s my five, now I’d love to hear yours! I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend — I think we all deserve that!

Friday Five Late Edition

TGIF! Sorry guys for being late. Life is a roller coaster. This will have to be quick as I’m leaving to go get an x-ray. Here’s my five:

  1. Monday I had to clean carpets after taking Maggie to boarding. We don’t know what’s going on with the carpets, but we do know we hope to put new floors in with the next couple years (that was part of our original plan with this house). And I knew the my infection or whatever it is in my nose was coming back. I said nothing because Wizard’s surgery is important and I am not contagious. I’ve even done covid tests. It’s something going on with me, not a virus.
  2. Tuesday was a blur but things went well. The only complication was boarding couldn’t get Maggie’s bath done. They kept her another night at no charge, which helps us out too.
  3. Wednesday I went to my own doctor and he could see my nose and throat are inflamed. And he can see the sore spot. I need a full sinus xray and he’s getting me a referral to a specialist to determine what it is. He also gave me strong prescription ointment and that’s helping. If it clears it up and my x-ray is okay, I could skip the specialist, but it also might be wise to have it checked out (it’s wise, I know). After that, I picked up Maggie and brought her home. She was tired and not real hungry but she ate her dinner okay.  3a) While at boarding the last night, Maggie staged a “prison break” getting out of her enclosure and opening the gate to the small front lobby. Wizard and I cracked up about that. She was fine — the door was locked. The owner found her early the next morning just casually wandering around. Maggie is very intelligent when she wants to be, so this both surprises and doesn’t surprise me. She’s so “good” she rarely does stuff like that. But she is also driven to find me.
  4. Maggie was very sick and crying very early Thursday morning. I didn’t know it (I hadn’t slept in two nights so I was out cold), so Wizard just put her in her bed in our room. It wasn’t until the next morning I discovered she’d been really sick. And then she started having bloody diarrhea. It was a long day trying to care for her and get her into her vet. They tried, but last night I ended up taking her to emergency. They did a free evaluation and determined she’s stable enough to go home. They believe she found something to eat at boarding and with her history, her insides got irritated and bled a bit. There’s a reason we keep her on a strict diet. Not to blame the boarding place — there’s a lot of dogs and people, and things can happen. Her vet then called late that evening  right after I got home from the emergency vet, and said it could also be stress colitis which fits Maggie’s history too. They have meds on standby for me to pickup if she needs them.  Now she’s on a rice, boiled chicken and water diet.
  5. I slept with Maggie and she’s looking better this morning. Assuming that holds, I’ll go get my x-ray. So far, Wizard is healing as expected. He’s in pain, but ice helps a lot. With all this, it’s been a hard week BUT everyone has been nice and helpful where they can. There are not enough vets and too much demand. Hopefully Wizard and Maggie will be fine :-) And one day I’ll catch up on sleep, exercise and cleaning the house.

So that was my week, how was yours? Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Friday Five

TGIF! Time to share five random things about our week. Here’s mine:

  1. This morning, I finished my antibiotics. I’ve tolerated them pretty well, but my stomach is definitely ready to be done. I clearly had some infection that this took care of which is good. For the record, I’d rather not take antibiotics but they are amazing when we actually need them.
  2. This week I batched cooked a lot, including sourdough bread. Mostly just so I can feed myself, LOL. Limiting the amount of process food, gluten and dairy I eat keeps me busy in the kitchen. On the upside, I have the time since I’m not on constant deadlines. There really isn’t a downside beyond laziness. And while we’re talking about cooking, I don’t think my cilantro herb plant is going to survive the summer heat. I knew it probably wouldn’t but was hoping for a little cilantro magic since I use it a lot. But it turned really hot this week and cilantro doesn’t look good. I did a little first aid today, but my hopes are not high. On the other hand, I’ve used him in many dishes so he’s been a good provider up till now :-)
  3. One of our stresses this week was we had to find new homeowners insurance, and that’s become very difficult in “fire prone” areas. Several insurers have pulled out in fire and flood areas in CA. Wizard took the lead on this, and I think we have it solved. But wow, it was a little scary there for a bit. We did have a last resort solution because we saw this coming before we bought this house, but it was definitely not our first choice. Anyhow, just wanted to mention that Wizard tackled this one and got it solved (unless something changes at the last minute), which has taken some really worry off us. The neighbors are all going through this too and we are all sharing info which also helps.
  4. So, don’t laugh, but I finally called my brother :-) I don’t talk to him and his wife as often as I’d like because I’m terrible at making calls. I feel like I accomplished something big this week to stop what I was doing and make the call! I think about people all the time, but my mental telephone, text and email system is seriously unreliable. So that’s my big accomplishment this week, LOL. He’s only slightly better at making calls than me — it’s genetic flaw, I think.
  5. I’ve had lunch plans with a friend that we’ve had to reschedule for two weekends now. Sometimes life just does not want to cooperate. So this weekend is a mystery and anything can happen!

That’s my five, now I’d love to hear yours! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Weekend Roundup

TGIF! Time to share five random things about our week. Here’s mine:

  1. So far, more than 90% of all our plants are surviving! I think we’ve had two or three that died. I’m pretty happy about that! And we’ve had a lot more sunshine which makes the plants happy. Sadly, we elected not to get a lemon tree because Wizard is worried it’ll get too big and we don’t want that. I think I need to put my tomato and bell pepper off until next spring. We’ve gotten so much done, I’m fine with it. I happy just to have my little herb planter. We really enjoy the backyard.
  2. I had a couple days of not feeling my best, and made myself do less. YouTube shorts are a great way to distract myself and keep from starting projects that will end up making me more sore.
  3. On Thursday when I got up, I felt so much better, which means it’s nothing big flaring up, so yay!  As I had my coffee and planned my day, I swore I wouldn’t overdo it. And then I overdid it by 2 p.m. and kept going until the evening, LOLOL! I’m nothing if not predictable! But then again, why not? Life is too short to always worry about how I’ll feel the next day.
  4. Oldest, Special K and Turbo went to the Caribbean last week and just got back. My son has called twice to tell me all the fun things they did and the tasty food they ate. I’m not jealous :-(  But truthfully, I am really happy they had such a good time because they both work so hard. The did have two glitches; a  travel delay for a day in Florida, and Special K had a little encounter with fire coral which she does NOT recommend. But otherwise they had a great trip!
  5. Tomorrow evening we are going to see Turbo and family to hear more about the trip and just hang out for dinner. I’m taking cupcakes because that’s what Turbo wanted — chocolate of course. Sunday Wizard is racing and I may or may not do something. Fourth of July is next Tuesday — time sure keeps flying!

So that’s my five, now I’d love to hear yours!

Friday Five

TGIF!! Friday is so reliable and shows up every 7th day like clockwork. I appreciate that! Okay time to share five random things about our week. Here’s mine!

  1. Top of my mind as I write this is that the five people on that Titanic submersible are presumed dead. So tragic. Confession time: I tried not to read this stuff and get invested because submarines in general trigger my fear of being trapped, plus the fact that wasn’t a fully functional submarine but a submersible dependent on a launch ship, and finally, I didn’t think this would have a better outcome. But I got sucked in, and I really feel for all the families and loved ones of the victims. Just to be clear, despite my own fears, I respect those who are more adventurous than me, and I’m deeply sorry this tragedy happened.
  2. I have not baked anything since Sunday. I’m mildly proud of that for some reason, LOL. I was on one heck of a baking spree last week.
  3. Yesterday I met Biker Witch for coffee, a little browsing and then we finished up the day at Trader Joes. I so enjoyed just seeing her and hanging together. Plus the coffee at the little pastry and sandwich shop we went to was amazing! It’s been awhile since I had such good coffee. The people who worked there (and I think owned it) were so nice and very friendly too. I love that. Then we found another lovely woman in a small arts and crafts shop — she’s a retired accountant now working for fun in her son and daughter-in-law’s business. I found her refreshingly happy and living the life she chose with joy.
  4. Oh, I just looked at my walking app and discovered I’ve walked 30 miles this month (that I tracked, I only track dedicated walks, not anything else). That shocked me. Of course, the math makes sense, but I just hadn’t thought about it. By the way, Maggie is fine now, I’m just making sure I keep her walks a bit slower and no more than a mile through at least today. Then we’ll edge up a bit more if she’s ready. She is an aging girl and it’s getting hotter so I’m keeping a close eye on her.
  5. Wizard and I planted the rest of the hill along the side of the house. I’m amazed at how much Wizard is doing now that his back is healed. He laid the rest of the drip line and dug all the holes for the plants! Now we have a couple bare spots here and there left to fill in with some plants but that’s easy to do. It’s been a bit of work and a lot of pleasure to work on this back yard. I hope we continue to love it over the years as we do now. Even Maggie really enjoys being out there! That said, in the summer we will miss our old pool, and that’s okay. We can always invite ourself to Youngest’s house to use his pool!

That’s my five now I’d really love to hear yours! I hope everyone has a fabulous and healthy weekend!

Friday Five

TGIF! Okay lets dive right into sharing five random things about our week.

  1. I am off jury duty as of last night! I got lucky this time and didn’t have to go in. Wizard sulked because he not only had to go in, but got the judge that held them there for two days.
  2. Youngest is having car issues, which is not unusual. But the state of California has turned what should be an inconvenient headache into a blazing migraine with no cure. It’s utter craziness. So this morning I am picking him up from another mechanic (his third or fourth) as they try to solve this problem. FYI — the car drives and performs fine. This is a state bureaucratic issued and the dealership just shrugged their shoulders and said, “We don’t know.”  I’m seriously pissed for him. Not that he needs me to be pissed, LOL. But he’ll solve it and move on because that’s what adults do.
  3. I bought some pillows and a candle for my outdoor space (because I had a gift card!), and now I’m out there all the time. Wizard and I love that patio.  This weekend, we’re hoping to get the ceiling fan installed.  I mentioned to Youngest that Wizard and I could probably do it now that he has the bracket up. Guys, I was so proud of him — he was very tactful when he insisted he would do it. I know he didn’t want us trying to maneuver the fan up the ladder and because I can appreciate his concern, I told him we would wait for him. The kids seldom worry about us doing anything, so if they do have a concern, we make a point to listen.
  4. So I think I accidently created a Sourdough Monster in Wizard :-) He’s worrying that we will run out and wants to know when I’m starting on the next set of loaves. I find that hilarious. In the beginning, he was afraid of the starter, and my first efforts weren’t turning out the way we hoped. But now he’s a sourdough fiend!
  5. Turbo is coming over this weekend. That’s awesome. But Turbo’s dad (Oldest) loves sourdough so I told him we’d bring out the loaf in the freezer while he’s here. Wizard tried to talk me into buying sourdough from the store and giving oldest that, and save the homemade stuff for him. I just rolled my eyes and told him I’m serving the homemade sourdough to Oldest and Special K. Wizard will find a way to cope, LOL. We are both looking forward to seeing Oldest, Special K and Turbo! Sometime today I have to go buy some snacks for Turbo since I don’t think I’ll have time to bake. I already bought him a toy when I was in Target this week. I had zero intention of doing that when I ran into Target so I’m not sure how that happened, but I do have a theory: Grandma’s have a magnetic field that draws toys into their carts and we don’t notice it until we’re checking out. By then, it’s too late and so we keep buying toys. That’s my story! (Wizard rolled his eyes at that one!).

So that’s my five, now I’d really love to hear yours! I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Friday Five

TGIF! I hope everyone had a great week! Let’s get right to sharing five random things in our week:

  1. Clearly I can read a calendar, because until last night, I thought I was on jury duty starting this Monday. Wizard informed me that the 15th isn’t until the following Monday. It works out well for me as I had a few things I’d like to do next week but thought I couldn’t make plans. So that’s happy news.
  2. My Monday doctor appointment with my GI doctor was great! I have a diagnosis of elimination of IBS (Irritable Bowl Syndrome) which is a vague  condition they don’t fully understand yet so they call it a “syndrome”. This doctor has been tremendously helpful in giving me tools to regain control, and once he pointed me in the right direction, I have done (and continue to do) a huge amount of research. When the doctor found that out how much effort and real change I’ve put into this, down to making my own bread, he was so pretty excited. I’m technically “released” with the caveat that I call him if I experience symptoms that I can’t get control of pretty quickly. I can’t let myself get to a point of losing weight uncontrollably for weeks again, and I’m understand that. I don’t really want to go through it again either :-). But yay for no more doctors, tests and labs for a while!
  3. I got my hair done yesterday and really like it! She redid the color to a cooler tone which I love. Wizard liked the warmer reddish tones but it’s my hair and he’s smart enough to be happy that I’m happy :-) I really love the cut too. I’d take a picture but I don’t want to, LOL!
  4. Maggie wanted to say something here: Guys guess what? I got a bath and a mani-pedi! And my friends at the groomers put this jazzy scarf on me too! My mom said I’m beautiful!
  5. This weekend we are having some of Wizard’s family out. I’m making chicken and beef enchiladas, rice and apple pie. I hopefully will get some sourdough bread made too and plan a bruschetta to go with it but that depends on how all I get done. We are looking forward to seeing them!

So that’s my five, now I’d love to hear yours!
