Weekend Roundup

It was a quiet weekend! The highlight was seeing Turbo Saturday morning, we had fun hanging out with him and his parents. Otherwise, Wizard and I have pretty much done normal stuff and decompressed a bit. I did have a neighbor from another street stop by when I was out front with Maggie to tell me he sees us out walking, and she’s a really well-trained dog. Um…yes and no :-) She’s great in a familiar, structured environment where she knows what is expected of her, but she can be thrown into anxiety by new experiences and situations. However, I appreciate the compliment very much.

So speaking of new stuff for Maggie: I’m hosting Thanksgiving this year, and my son’s two big dogs Jett and Hazel, are coming over.  That will be a new challenge for Maggie, as it’ll be the first time she experiences another dog in our house. We’ll see how good or well-trained she is then, especially with all the added chaos of so many people here. I’m really hoping she behaves, but that whole well-trained thing could turn out to be a lie :-) We have a couple of strategies to help, so fingers crossed!

Speaking of training, I need to exert some of that discipline and control over my writing and book. Life and physical issues are not going to conform to my artistic whims, LOL.

That was my weekend. How was yours?

Yay for a quiet weekend with Turbo time! Fingers crossed your Thanksgiving goes well for Maggie. Yes, time to re-train yourself to write again. That’s what I’m doing now, re-training. So far, so good.

Another quiet weekend for us in the Ozarks. Read some, wrote every day, watched the tube, ate too much. Yesterday, I drafted Hubs into the role of photographer and had him take some new author pics of me, which I then tweaked and splashed around where author pics are necessary. We’re due for some craptastic icy weather later today, so I have to muster the gumption to go out this morning and get things we’ll be out of by Wednesday. It’s 48 right now and it’ll drop to 28 by 5pm. Fun times.

We had lots of soccer games. Jake went in his Service Dog In Training vest. He loves the kids but is happy to get away from them after awhile. I discovered one of his “triggers” when we went to the bathroom. I have the feeling bathroom stalls are too similar to shelter kennels. He freaked. I got him calm enough to come in with me in the handicapped stall, though he really wanted to crawl out. It was an adventure but when we were done, he was like…well…mom with with me. Not so bad. He’s also very good at matching his pace to mine on “Work-heel” command. I hang onto the handle attached to the vest with my left hand while holding his leash, attached to his collar in my right. He stays right with me. Patience and time. Maggie will learn too!

That was pretty much the weekend. Beautiful weather and then the bottom dropped out today. It’s 27 degrees (high yesterday was 76) and we have to be on the road this evening. BRRRR I need to go find something dressy but warm to wear so I can get ready and then try to get words done. I’m at just over 19K words on two projects–the majority being on the new one that released in Feb.

Have a great day and week!

I bet Turbo loved going to Mac Donald’s with you guys. When my boys were little they would go there every Saturday morning with hubs mom and dad. They loved it.

What a nice compliment from your neighbor on Maggie’s training. You’ve done an excellent job with her. You are right about the test over Thanksgiving. Having other dogs on Maggie’s turf will be different. I hope she handles it well.

We went to The Capital Grille for our anniversary dinner. It was very good as always and we had to bring home our free chocolate cake. We’re both light weights and fill up quickly. Lobster bisque and a dinner of scallops and we were both full :).

We’re under a winter storm warning. We live in the snow belt and they are predicting 10-14 inches by Wednesday 8 am. We’ll see. The weather people tend to blow things out of proportion.

It’s Veteran’s Day therefore hubs gets a free meal at the local place we frequent. Since they aren’t a big chain I think it’s very nice of them to give back to the vets.

I hope it’s cooling down there and the fires get under control.

    Have a great evening.

B.E., yes on re-training, but not today, unfortunately. Life tends to show up and demand attention :-)

I saw one of your author pics yesterday, I think. It was great!!! Hubs did an excellent job! And you got words in, plus all the other weekend stuff.

I see the weather is getting brutal in your neck of the woods. Stay warm and safe!

Silver, Jake did really well!! It sounds like you only had the one challenge with the bathroom stalls, and you showed him he can do it. If the weather cooperates, maybe you can run him back midweek and walk him through it again?

I’m impressed with both you and Jake! I know what a heel should be with both a performance dog and a service dog (two different heels for sure), and Maggie has neither. I haven’t tried to teach her since her other handler–Wizard–doesn’t follow through. But she doesn’t need it, Jake will absolutely have to have the steady heel at the right place to provide the balance and extra support you’re hoping for. This is so interesting!! Thanks for sharing!

I hope Maggie will learn to share her home with our guest pups. I’m mildly worried, but I can put her in our room we can’t work her through it.

    WOW!!! 19K is awesome!

    Happy Monday!

Viki, Turbo definitely loves McDonalds, like most kids.

Thanks on Maggie :-) She was so well behaved when we go her, that most of our work has just been tweaks and consistency so I feel bad taking credit.

Glad you had a good anniversary dinner, and free chocolate cake is awesome!

That is very generous and patriotic of the local restaurant gives veterans free meals.

Yikes, that’s some crazy weather coming your way–if the forecasters are right. Stay safe!
