Friday Five

TGIF! Time to share five random things about our week. Here’s mine:

  1. We had another heartbreaking school shooting yesterday in California. We are desperately sad and angry, as I imagine most people feel about these horrible and completely pointless tragedies. The poor families and survivors have had their lives shattered in a few moments of terror, and for what? I can’t even pretend to understand. Some days, I really like fictional worlds better than the one we live in.
  2. We went to see the new movie Midway, and really liked it.
  3. I wrote a tad yesterday, desperately trying something to fix problems. Moving a scene around might do it…or not…who knows! What I do know for sure, is I need to get mean about writing time if I want to get back to the job I still love :-)
  4. So on Wednesday, I told Wizard I was expecting a package from Amazon. Naturally he asked me what it was, and I told him a blue pumpkin. I think he just heard “pumpkin”. When it arrived and I opened it, he was so confused. “It’s blue.” So I explained it was for the Thanksgiving table to go with some other, smaller pumpkins and burlap leaves I’d already bought. His next question was, “But why blue?” I pointed to my kitchen “fall” towels that have pumpkins on it, including a blue one and said, “It has to match. I can’t possibly host Thanksgiving if my table decorations don’t match the towels.” He’s been with me enough years to guess I was yanking his chain :-) He just smiled blandly and asked if I needed anything else. Some days, he has the whole husband-of-a-crazy-writer thing totally nailed. “Nope,” I replied, “I’m good. I mean I have a plastic blue pumpkin, what else could I want?” I was pretty serious about that–my blue pumpkin makes me happy, LOL!
  5. I’m not sure what I’m doing this weekend. I may see a kid or grandkid, on the other hand, I wouldn’t mind actually working either. Although Wizard seems to keep coming up with ways to distract me from work too. But back to the weekend…no firm plans yet so anything could happen!

So that’s my five random things, now I’d love to hear yours! I hope everyone has a great weekend!

If a blue pumpkin makes you happy, I’m all for it. I’ve been hearing good things about Midway, so I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes, get mean about the writing time. ;o)

    1) You know the other day when we were talking about doing stuff and then regretting it later? That was my yesterday. I was raking leaves and I felt fine while I was doing it, so I did a lot of it. Afterwards, I was toast. Way overdid it.
    2) Because I overdid and was toast, I broke my writing streak. After 13 days in a row writing, zero words for yesterday. Which sucks, but I’m not going to kick myself over it.
    3) My mom sent me a sweatshirt that used to belong to my dad. (She was cleaning out closets.) She says I gave it to him, but I honestly don’t remember it. It’s from the town he was born in, so I must’ve bought it when I was doing outside sales in that area. Anyway, she said he was tickled with it. I wish I could remember.
    4) I spent some time in health insurance hell this week. Gotta love ‘open enrollment’. :sarcasm: I got new insurance at a cheaper rate and I get to tell my old insurance company to go away, which I would’ve done months ago if I could’ve.
    5) Somehow or other, we ran out of baked goods all at once. With my baking rotation, this should not have happened. Now, I need to make cookies, granola bars, and something appley to get the stock level back up. But not today. Hubs will get his choice of one today, so he needs to choose wisely. ;o)

I’m sad that a child is so lost that he does something like what happened yesterday. Breaks my heart for all involved. In other news: Wow, Jen and B.E., I’m feelin’ y’all. Just sayin’… 😏

    My five:
    1) I’m finishing Chp. 5 today. Chp. 6 is written (Puzzler, remember?) and I hope to finish Chp. 7 which has approximately 500 words. So yay. Writing is working for me this week. The least I’ve written is 1K. Mostly I’m above 2K each day. Yay.

    2) Monday, for Veteran’s Day, we drove our 93 yo USN veteran (he served on the USS Enterpirse) up to Enid to be honored as the USN Legacy Veteran from the Woolring Museum foundation. LG ordered Roy a uniform and got him all set up with his ribbons. He was the hit of the night–lots of people wanting their picture taken with him. Pretty cool stuffs. Long trip, long program, late night, but totally worth it!

    3) I think we have soccer tomorrow. I need to check. Speaking of Stormy, he did the bible reading at chapel on Wednesday, the story of Moses and the burning bush. The teacher picked him because he’s her best reader. Only and Baseball Boy make sure he gets more than the required reading time and Only worked hard on the passage with him. We didn’t go because we didn’t want him showing out because we were there. Only snuck in after the program started and she got phone video. So proud of him.

    4) Have I mentioned I don’t like frigid weather? Yeah…at least we’ve been above freezing for a little bit the past few days. Frigid is good for killing bugs but that’s about all.

    5) Jake and I went to vote Tuesday. He wasn’t too sure when we pulled up at the building. He cowered in the back seat and didn’t want to get out without coaxing. Once we got through the doors, he was like…”oh! Okay. This is not what I thought it was.” I suspect he thought it was a kennel or pound. The poll workers fussed over him and he was very good. Sat beside me, leaning against my leg, like he’ll need to do with LG. I still haven’t gotten up my nerve to take him shopping. One of these days. LOL

    Have a good weekend, everyone!

    1. So sick of the school shootings. Maybe if parents would parent it would help.
    2. Glad you liked Midway. I thought the preview looked good.
    3. Sure hope you can work out the book. I feel for you and hate that it’s been so hard to get the way you want it. I’m sure it will come together when “it” wants to.
    4. I love how you and Wizard are :-P . You’re both so cute.
    5. Maybe a little bit of Turbo Terror would spice up your weekend just right ;).

1a. Had lunch with the middle son yesterday. It was so nice to see him. Haven’t seen him since 10/14 (Harrison’s birthday). He’s doing well and so is DIL.
2a. Had to contact middle son to take over my computer today. Couldn’t print :(. Seems HP did some update and screwed up my network :(.
3a. Hubs has an ice cream/custard addiction. He wants it every night and has a fit if I don’t have it with him. We never used to eat after dinner but since he retired he’s changed the game plan. I’m not having it ;).
4a. Cynthia Eden sent me ONE HOT HOLIDAY via bookfunnel so it will take over as top read for me now :).
5a. Hubs best friends’ mom (98 yrs old) gave hubs a homemade apple strudel. It’s going in the oven in 20 minutes ;). YUM!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

B.E., jumping right to your 5:

    1) Yep it’s easy to overdo when we get busy like that! Hope your soreness eases.
    2) 13 days straight of writing is great and you earned a day off. I know, I know, NaNo…but time off may refresh you.
    3) I hate not remembering, but evidently, it was very important to your dad. And that was so sweet of your mom.
    4) Health Insurance is a constant struggle.
    5) Oh no! Running out of baked goods is unacceptable! LOL!

I really hope you and your husband have a good weekend fully stocked with baked goods :-)

Silver, I agree. It’s beyond tragic. Okay let’s talk about you:

    1) Wowl! You’re channeling your inner Nora :-) Keep going!
    2) That is so wonderful that you and LG made sure the 93 year old vet had his moment on Veterans Day!
    3) I bet it was killing you not to be in there when Stormy read! But what a good grandma to make the best choice for him. Stormy is growing into a good young man!
    4) Brrr! I wouldn’t like it either.
    5) Jake is making progress. Every good experience will help him forget bad experiences in his past. You’re doing great!

Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Viki, Turbo would definitely jazz up the weekend :-)

    1) So glad you got to have lunch with Middle Son.
    2) Ugh, my printer is fickle on the best day, and updates on any of my devices always make me hold my breath. Hope Middle Son was able to fix it.
    3) Yeah, my experience is men retire and regress in eating patterns. For a few years, I held firm, but I’ve gotten sloppy this year and it shows.
    4) That’s so cool that Cynthia Eden did that!
    5) I bet that apple strudel is delicious! I’m a little jealous and very impressed that a 98 year old woman was able to make it!

    Have a great weekend!
