Friday Five

TGIF! You know what that means! Time to share five random things about our week. Let’s do this!

  1. The week is ending better than it started. You know those cupcakes in the fridge? They have to be dizzy by now! I’ve had them in and out of the freezer quite a few times (but never long enough to defrost) in an attempt to go to Wizard’s mom’s. But it just didn’t happen this week. He called her on her birthday, we have a gift and cupcakes, but life is just a little twisty. Every plan we make gets changed multiple times. We thought we’d go today but…
  2. Wizard got called in for Jury Duty. Here in CA, you’re on standby for a week, and you’re call each night to find out if you go in the next day. Each day has been a mystery, and then last night, he was told to come in. So far, he’s called me twice and texted twice, and he’s not impressed. He got a judge who has decided to treat possible jurors like prisoners or kindergarteners. I’d gloat but…guess what came in the mail for me yesterday?? My jury duty summons. This is a plot to annoy us. Yes, yes, I get the whole civic duty thing. Whatever.
  3. So yesterday we had to stay home for an appointment. So we’ve lived in this house more than six months now, and the day we picked up the keys, we were told that the garage side door had been keyed incorrectly. This is an easy fix — all they had to do was replace the doorknob and key it to our housekeys. We were promised this constantly, but for reasons that confound logic — no one could ever manage to find a doorknob and do it. Even though houses are being built in this same track all day every day. And they all have doorknobs keyed to the owners keys! It’s like magic! Finally we got annoyed and submitted a claim higher up. What we thought would happen is the higher up would tell the foreman to grab a doorknob, and spend four minutes replacing and rekeying it. Nope, they put in a call to Door Specialists. I can’t make this stuff up, the sent out an employee of Hakes Sash & Door to resolve this complex problem. The expert confirmed the obvious problem — we needed a new doorknob. But of course he didn’t have one because this is not a call they get. Like ever. So they had to order a doorknob. It took 8 weeks to arrive. Why? No freaking idea! Then they scheduled an appointment with the same door expert to install it.  And finally the new doorknob was installed. And that is why we stayed home yesterday. Is this not a dumb boring story?? I’d like to point out that we wanted to go to my mother-in-laws, but we were trapped at home waiting for a doorknob. That’s like a worse excuse than my dog ate my homework. It’s been a truly weird week, trust me.
  4. I put Willa my previously freeze-dried sourdough starter to work! I used a new recipe for sourdough yesterday and Willa did her job so well! I fermented it overnight and baked it today. The bread looks good. I don’t know how it tastes yet as I’m writing this yesterday before we ate any. I’m looking forward to it! I eat very little gluten but a slice of sourdough if it’s long-fermented is usually okay. (If you’re are interested, the long fermentation helps breakdown some of the troublesome fructans and gluten). Here’s a picture of one of the two loaves (the second one goes in the freezer to keep the cupcakes company):
  5. Tomorrow we are going to the airshow. At least that’s the plan, although with this week anything could happen :-) We haven’t been in a very long time, and decided to pay for actual seats (on folding chairs, LOL). Naturally, the heat chose this week to show up, but we should be fine for a couple hours or so. We both are looking forward to it if nothing else decides to go wonky this week.

And that’s my five, now I’d love to hear yours! I’m sure yours will be vastly more interesting and not involved a long winded story about a doorknob.  I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Poor cupcakes. At least they will have some company now. Pretty Willa! I bet she is yummy. Ah, the great “god” named Judge. I’ve run into a few of those in my careers. Good luck to Wiz! Hope you get to see his mom soon! Yay for airshow. And the stupidity of people should never astound me but sometimes… At least the door works with the keys now, yeah? Okay my five:

    1. Mother Nature got into a drunken bar brawl with Oklahoma Wednesday night. We’re okay though Only got caught in one of the big hail storms. She has new dents and a cracked windshield in the Mustang. :( South and east of us did not fair so well. 12 tornados. Sadly, 3 deaths, but only a few injuries and considering the populated areas? That’s almost a miracle.

    2. LG’s truck is home. The mechanic got the moonroof closed and sealed but couldn’t “fix” it. LG has decided he doesn’t use it enough to spend the $700 at a dealership to get it fixed ($400 for parts, $300 for labor!). Wise decision.

    3. My new glasses came in early! We picked them up Wednesday–just in time for me to be able to read the fine print on the weather crawler on TV. Far vision is near-on perfect. Close vision is pretty darn good–I can read my phone and package directions without a magnifying glass! The “problem” is the middle vision, ie. working on the computer. I’m still trying to get the monitor adjusted to the right distance and angle. It’s a process. LOL

    4. Speaking of, I AM getting some writing done but as part of the adjustment, everything in the MS is now in bold so I can see it better. We’ll see if that becomes permanent. No big deal if it is, it means another step in formatting when it comes time to publish.

    5. For some reason, Loki loves to “shimmy” up the bed under the chenille bedspread and then hide at the foot of the bed. Last night, Pete was in. He has a spot at the foot of the bed where he “cat loafs” to watch the rest of the house (the master opens onto the kitchen). Whiler Pet’s back was turned, Loki climbed up under the bedspread and played bed shark. Pete almost somersaulted to get turned around and then they had a play fight with the bedspread between them before Loki “disappeared” over the side of the bed and under it. Yes, I laughed. And yes, Pete was affronted that I would laugh at his loss of dignity. Ah, cats.

    Have a great weekend all!

    1. I’m sorry you didn’t make it to MIL’s this week. Those cupcakes must be dizzy :-P .
    2. Go figure that Wizard would get the call to go in at the end of the week. If he’s on a case, I hope it’s a quickie that wraps fast.
    3. That’s how it goes  . When is you duty block? If you get called in for duty, I hope you get some super cool case where you can enjoy yourself.
    4. Your bread looks yummy! Tell us how it tastes when you get a free moment.
    5. Have fun at the airshow :-P .

1a. I cleaned almost all of my windows over the past couple days and yesterday the Wasp/ant man came to spray and ruined EVERY SINGLE window. I have to leave it for a few days to kill the buggers, but I can’t wait to clean them again.
2a. My mom is still hanging on. She hasn’t been conscious in days. I’m just glad my cousin is making sure she is in no pain.
3a. I wish hubs weren’t a problem and I could be there with my mom. Unfortunately, he is doing more and more off the wall stuff. He thinks he’s fine. I know it’s the disease but man it’s hard.
4a. Yesterday it was 83F with low humidity. So beautiful. All the trees are budding. So nice to look at but with these allergies, I’m inside :-P .
5a. I bought some new workout short via Walmart on line. They came yesterday. They are supposed to fit XS to XL. They fit me great and I am an XS. There is NO WAY anyone larger than a medium could wear these things. Bad advertising.

I hope you enjoy the airshow and have a great weekend!

Silver, yeah, Wizard’s not a fan of this judge. Wizard has to go back Monday for more jury selection. I don’t know if he’ll get on the case. We’ll see what happens. It’s annoying ONLY in that he wasn’t supposed to go Monday so we had to shuffle stuff around, but that’s pretty minor.

    1) I saw the weather warning of OK! I’m glad you’re okay but really sorry about Only’s car. That’s expensive damage. 3 deaths is very sad. And we’re all somewhat helpless when it comes to weather. There’s only so much we can do to prepare.
    2) Yep that’s what I’d do too. At least it’s sealed.
    3) Sounds like your vision corrected a bit better than you expected. If the glasses are progressives, it’s definitely hard to find that middle vision spot, and you have more issues than I do. I hope you get it figured out.
    4) Sometimes bold also has a sharper clarity that helps. Whatever works! Yay on writing! Keep in mind, though, you’re asking your brain to adjust to some pretty big visual changes and it just takes time. Your brain will adapt, but it’s not always an easy or completely linier process.
    5) Loki is a bed shark, LOLOL! That cracked me up. Why he likes doing that is anyone’s guess, but cats are very creative! But sorry Pete’s dignity was offended by your laughing :-)

    Have a great weekend!

Viki, I think my week is May 15th, but I need to double check. It’s on my refrigerator so I don’t forget. And yes, the sourdough bread is really good. I’m happy with it!

    1) I wish I cleaned windows as much as you do! But so sorry they got all messed up. That would really bug me too. We desperately need to clean windows here, but other projects keep cropping up. We need a day of the two of us working together to do them all.
    2) There’s no good answer to your mom being in her end days. I’m also glad someone who knows her is there to make sure she’s not in pain.
    3) It must be incredibly frustrating to feel like you can’t leave your husband when you so want to be with your mom. Being a fulltime caregiver with few breaks is the hardest job. I don’t think people who haven’t done it can fully grasp the levels of stress and exhaustion. I’m really sorry you’re going through this.
    4) I don’t blame you for viewing it all inside where there’s less pollan.
    5) That is bad advertising and totally misleading. But I’m glad they fit you!

Hope you have a good weekend and your mom remains comfortable and peaceful until her time comes. Hugs to you during this difficult time.
