Friday Five
TGIF! Time to share five random things about our week, here’s mine:
- Yesterday was a frustrating day. Before I whine, we are getting way more done than not, so this is just griping about little things. But yesterday was dealing with the last services getting set up, and the two things giving us headaches are TV and the landline (Wizard wants it with our old landline number because his aging mom knows that number– that’s a danged good reason). But the day just brimmed with frustration and ended with me on hold for an hour and a half and the useless old phone company that never answered. We just want to import the old number, not buy a human heart on the black market. However, we can live full and complete lives without the landline plus specific phone number so it’s minor but annoying.
- Maggie loves all the people coming to the house! It’s a party for her. We find her in the office staring out the window looking for more new friends. I love that for her. She also wants Wizard to take her to the mailbox every night after dinner. I soon learned why. Wizard was busy the other night, so I took her. I passed a guy who said, “Hi Maggie.” It figures, Maggie’s making friends in the neighborhood before me It turns out she’d met the new neighbor on one of the nights Wizard had taken her to the mailbox. He was very nice, and I was impressed that he remembered Maggie’s name!
- In case anyone here has a wheat allergy and needs gluten free food items, let me just say you have my full sympathy! They aren’t that easy to find and very expensive! I only need to do this for a few weeks so it’s not too big a deal. But for those who live with a wheat allergy, hugs!
- Today, Biker Witch and I are going to lunch to celebrate her birthday. I’m so looking forward to that! We’re going to Cheesecake Factory, and I’ll make the best choices I can with the low fodmat diet but one meal isn’t going to hurt me. I usually can’t eat much anyway lately (but sometimes I can!). Wizard is encouraging me to get dessert, eat a few bites and bring home the rest and he’ll eat it. He’s helpful like that!!
- Turbo is coming about to see our house! Oldest son (his dad) told me I should have the movers on standby in case Turbo doesn’t approve and we have to move back. Ha! Not even for Turbo would I move again! But I’m really looking forward to having Turbo and his parents out. It’s Turbo’s mom’s birthday this weekend too, and Oldest son said she wanted red velvet cupcakes. I have a good recipe, now we’ll see if my oven is up to the job!
That’s my five, but I’d love to hear yours! I hope everyone has the best weekend ever!

Gah, I hate calling the phone company – no matter which one it is. It shouldn’t be that big a deal in this day and age to port a phone number from one line to another. Sheesh. Yay for Maggie! My middle sister has a thing which doesn’t allow her to eat wheat, so you have my sympathies. Yay for celebrating Biker Witch’s birthday! Mmm, cheesecake. Yay for Turbo time! I’m sure he’ll love your new house. And good luck with your foray into baking in the new house. Happy birthday to Turbo’s Mom. =o)
1) Last night, Hubs happened to look out the window at just the right time and saw a fox. I got to the window in time to see it, too, and then it trotted off down the road to irritate the neighborhood dogs. So pretty!
2) Unfortunately, it stayed in the area and must’ve been taunting the dog across the road in the middle of the night. Butch was going crazy barking for an hour or more. Blerg.
3) Hubs took my car in yesterday to get new brakes to replace the new brakes that squeaked. (Warranty work, so no more costs.) Fingers crossed it’s finally right. They didn’t squeak yesterday, so that’s something.
4) The other day, Hubs saw a turtle walking up the yard and two fawns investigating the ‘moving rock’. They were feinting at it and dancing around. I wish I’d been here to see it, but Hubs did a good job describing the fun.
5) Yesterday, they ordered pizza in for lunch and we all had a relaxing day, which was a nice change. Then they talked about possible ‘team building’ activities. I told them that type of lunch where we just hang out is the best kind of team building for me.

Enjoy lunch! And if you react to something, that will help narrow the list. Happy Birthday, Turbo Mom! I bet your new kitchen will be a dream to bake in. Maggie is such a sweetie! So glad she’s settling in and enjoying live at the new place. Let’s not talk about phone companies, um-kay? Okay, my five.
1. Stormy has been here. One more day–today. He’s a good kid so it isn’t a problem keeping him. Not that it ever was but now he doesn’t need to be constantly entertained. He and I started a Monopoly game yesterday that we’ll finish today. I’m winning. 😏
2. Yesterday was laundry. Stormy helped me “turn” the mattress (head to foot), which is recommended by the manufacturer. I remember when we used to just filp the darn things. Anyway, he kept the bedskirt in place while I hossed the mattress. It sounds like a little thing but it’s actually HUGE! Got the “winter” linens on, just in time.
3. Just in time because today’s high is forecast for the higher 60s and tomorrow’s in the higher 50s. I am soooo ready! Now if we could just get some rain. It’ll warm up some next week but nowhere close to AC weather. Yay!
4. Not much writing business done this week. After the hard push to get ASSASSIN’S MOON published, mind and body both needed a break. Plus, sales haven’t been exactly stellar so I’m not pushing hard to get UNDER THE ASSASSIN’S MOON polished. I’ll get it released some time next week. Besides, Monopoly with Stormy!
5. The Ring doorbell notification kept going off this morning starting at 6 a.m. I finally checked it. It was Long Tom Silver aka Hissy Cat. He was on the window sill pacing by the doorbell. And hissing. I obviously was late with the gushy food. He’s not around all the time but he’s a greedy gut and steals all the gushy food from Shylock Cat. I’ve started saving some back to put out later when Shy is out on the porch alone. No Pete but here’s a bonus Loki story. A lot of times, when I open the door to the garage, Pete will step across the threshold to rub against my ankles. Loki has started waiting for him to “boop” noses. Loki had the zoomies the other morning. He was off elsewhere in the house when I opened the door. The next thing I saw was a black void dashing THROUGH the door and out into the garage where he skidded to a halt right before crashing into some plastic storage bins. Loki looked around with an “Oh $h!+” expression. He did the Halloween cat pose, bounced a couple of steps and then scuttled back inside the house. The garage is a vast and scary place, don’cha know. And yes, I laughed. Which further squashed Loki’s dignity. Didn’t care.
Have a great weekend, all! We’re doing the sports thing–MLB playoffs, Stormy soccer, college football. And naps!

1. That’s just awful being stuck on hold all that time and still not getting through to resolve the phone number issue. I sure hope you are able to work it out. Wizard’s mom is in her 90’s, right, and shouldn’t have to learn a new number.
2. Maggie is quiet the social butterfly ;). I’m glad she is so happy and making friends.
3. I have several family members who are gluten intolerant and finding food that tastes good is very difficult. And like you stated, very expensive.
4. Sure hope you and Biker Witch had a great time today. Wizard is so funny :).
5. Turbo will love your new house and give it a thumbs up. Can’t wait to hear how the first baking goes. Red velvet cupcakes sound great. Remember the first time you use that oven it will smell since it’s brand new.
1a. Had to have youngest come over last night and bring in all my avocado plants and lemon tree from the deck. It may freeze. Spunk loves having his jungle back in the sunroom ;).
2a. Harrison and family are on their way up right now to celebrate his 5th birthday. The party is this Sunday even though his birthday is the 14th. They are going to sleep here Sunday night and leave, taking hubs with them. first thing Monday morning.
3a. I don’t have beds anymore but I do have a memory foam mattress that I pulled out and made up into a bed on the floor. Spunk has claimed it as his own :).
4a. It’s been a very chilly dark day today. I loved days like this even though most people don’t. Decided to make butternut squash soup and have grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for dinner. Spunk will love that too.
5a. I went to the apple farm this morning and bought more cider. It is so good. Don’t tell but I bought another apple fritter too ;). They make the best apple fritters I’ve ever had and they are huge. Each one is 10 inches in diameter and weighs about a pound. It takes me a few days to eat one.
Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy celebrating DIL’s Bday.

B.E., I’m so late in answering! Real Life kept interfering, and kept me rushing around. Okay, now for your five:
1) You are so lucky to see such cool wildlife!
2) Evidently Butch was not as appreciative of the cool fox. Sorry you guys had to listen to it.
3) Hope the new-new brakes are squeak free! It’s great that it was under warranty but such a pain to have to go back.
4) I can picture the fawns doing that with a turtle! Next time, hubs needs to video it!
5) A pizza lunch and bit of relaxing is my kind of team building too. I’m glad you had a break at work!
Hope you had a great weekend!

Silver, since I’m so late in answering, lets move right onto your five!
1) Stormy seems to be at a really easy age. Plus he’s an awesome kid!
2) That is huge! I could use Stormy’s help when I do turn the mattress too, LOL.
3) I’m all for the cooler weather too. Glad you’re getting it. It’s nice with open windows here today.
4) Silver you’ve been working so hard and deserve a break. I really hope sales pick up! Plus your are in a fierce Monopoly battle I want to know who won!
5) Oh Loki!!! He wants so much to be a fierce cat, but….LOLOLOL!! I can totally imagine him realizing he was in an unfamiliar place and going into kitty panic. I see why you call Tom Silver “hissy cat.” Even though you’re doing him a huge favor, he gets mad when you’re late putting out food!
Hope you had a good Stormy and sports weekend!

Viki, I’m sorry for being so late in answering! Now for your five:
1) Fall has clearly arrived! Glad Spunk is happy
2) Hope Harrison has a fun and Happy Birthday and you all have a great visit!
3) Spunk is so funny! Hopefully he will share when your oldest son and family arrive! (Or they are probably there now and may be gone when you read this.)
4) That soup sounds so good! I should learn to make it. I don’t know if Wizard would eat it, but I sure would! I could freeze it in lunch portion sizes. And I made your dinner all about me, LOL!
5) I bet that apple fritter is amazing! You deserve it! And of course, you need the apple cider with the dark and chilly days arriving!
I hope Harrison has a great birthday and you all had/have a great weekend!
