Wednesday’s Question

Short blog today :-) But this was a question I was thinking about while driving to the doctor’s today.

What was your most hated job?

Mine lasted about a week. I got a job at a small café. I can’t remember what I thought I was going to be doing, but I ended up bussing the tables. I couldn’t handle it — I think we all know I have a weak stomach :-) I very quickly got another job! The thing about having bad jobs, in my opinion, is they really motivate us to strive for better jobs! All my kids worked in things like fast food or similar jobs that sure motivated them to get useful college degrees and work hard to build careers they mostly enjoy.

I’m curious — what was your most hated job?

Happy Wednesday!

Ah, restaurant work. I did that for about a month in 1989. I was fired for something that totally wasn’t my fault. Still wasn’t my worst job. It wasn’t even in my bottom five. (I’ve worked a lot of jobs in my life.) I can’t pick which one was the absolute worst, though. Bottom five: telemarketing (DialAmerica), telemarketing (Hair & Beauty News), monitoring the A/V lab in college, selling Rainbow vacuum cleaners, working at a kennel. You would think that last one would be awesome, but it almost lost me my love of dogs. When I realized what it was doing to me, I marched right up to the boss and quit.

Easy question. I waitressed. I bounced. (Yes, I was a bouncer in a nightclub. Actually enjoyed that one a lot! 🤣 ) The worst one for me was working at an employment agency. I had no trouble matching applicants with prospective employers who had openings listed with the company it was the cold calling that was expected and recorded. I hate the phone. Have since I was a kid. I had to make a minimum of 10 cold calls a day. After a few weeks, I’d sit there staring at the phone with my stomach tied up in knots and my hands shaking. It was supposed to get me over my phobia. Nope. Just made it worse. I went to the boss about five minutes before she was going to call me in. We agreed I wasn’t cut out for the work and parted on good terms and I even got a reference4 from her. I’ll admit, I did work for the family business in Jr. high, high school, and college, but I’ve done a lot of other stuff in my very long life. But that one was the worst. For sure. *shudder*

I did autobody prep work one summer. It was both dry and wet sanding and it was terrible. My fingernails wore off and all that paint dust went into my lungs. No one had masks back then. The creep I worked for tried to not pay me. Then he tried to give me this broken down car as payment. I had to enlist some muscle and the tiny little creep finally paid me, in cash, with the guys right there.

I hope you have a nice afternoon.

    PS – I ordered a pizza peel 😄

B.E., telemarketing would definitely qualify in my book too! I’m sorry about working at the kennel. I can actually see how that might not be as great as it might sound. You were smart to get out before it changed your love for dogs.

You have a variety of experience!

Silver, ugh cold calling! I can imagine how much you hated that. I wouldn’t have gotten over my aversion and fear either. It’s not something a lot of us are cut out to do.

I remember that you were a bouncer in a nightclub.
That’s likely provided you some interesting experience, LOL.

Nothing wrong with working for the family business — that also provides great experience in life.

Viki, the work does sound hard, but the worst thing is the creep you worked for! Glad you found some help in getting paid. Unscrupulous jerks like that make my blood boil.

Awesome on the pizza peel! It’s on my list of things I want to get soon!
